Since mid-2021 gas and electricity prices have risen sharply in Europe. This has placed the single market in both gas and electricity under severe stress tests. It has also raised questions about the proper design of the electricity market on the path to net zero. This lecture will examine how electricity markets (wholesale and retail) are meant to work and what lessons have been learned about how electricity markets can be better designed to deliver efficient, secure and clean energy.
